I'm wanting to string up a guitar in the white and want to make a temporary bond on the fingerboard extension and bridge for easy removal.
I was wondering if I dilute my hide glue a little will this do what I want?

Might work. I don't know. I'd probably just use a few dots of Elmers.

A dot of glue under finger board extension will do the job -- An improperly/poorly glued bridge can cause unwanted excitement (and perhaps damage) SM sells special bridge pin hole bolts to use for temporary assembly -- I think that is a better choice.

+1 avoiding a temporary glue up of the bridge. The hollow Stew Mac bolts are really handy every once in while. A totally safe way to string up a bridge that's either off or hanging on by a thread.

I think a temp glue up of the extension would be ok.

In my experience, it takes a lot of dilution to weaken hide glue. Not until a standard mix of my 192 gram strength glue is cut again with 50% water does it really start to give up.
I would grab some scrap spruce and hardwood and make some quick samples. I think you will be surprised.
Another option is to put a little piece of newsprint on the spot you glue. The glue line tends to split through the paper.

Think this is common in violin world and would be my choice. The fingerboard extension does not need to be glued if you are worried about integrity. I have strung up quite a few guitars without this glued and left some up to 2 or 3 years. My thoughts are that it adds very little to the overall strength.

I put a tiny bead of 192 hide on the back edge of a 1 by 6 Bridge 25.4 guitar about four years ago and it is still Rock Solid. I haven't tried to get it off yet. I think if I do it again, I will use an even tinier bead!
